Marriage Counseling vs. Couples Therapy: Is There a Difference?

Massachusetts couples search for both, and the honest answer is that the terms are used interchangeably. "Marriage counseling" is simply the more traditional name — and you don't need to be married to do the work. What matters isn't what the work is called. It's how the person doing it was trained.

Most therapists see couples occasionally, in between individual clients. I see couples exclusively, and my training reflects that: Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the most research-backed approach to couples work available, and the Gottman Method, built on decades of research into what predicts whether relationships succeed or fail. Whatever you call it — marriage counseling, couples therapy, relationship counseling — what you get here is the same thing: structured, intensive work with someone who does nothing else.

What Marriage Counseling With Me Looks Like

It starts with a $100 consultation, applied toward your first session. You tell me what's happening; I tell you what I see; we both decide if this is the right fit.

From there we move into an assessment phase — one session together, then an individual session with each partner — and build a roadmap for the work. Sessions are 90 minutes, because at the 50-minute mark most couples are just getting to the real issue. We begin weekly to build momentum, then reduce frequency as you demonstrate follow-through outside the room.

This work is designed to end. Most couples see real progress within 8 to 12 sessions. The goal is your independence, not ongoing appointments.

Practical Questions About Marriage Counseling in Massachusetts

Do you accept insurance?

No. I can provide documentation (superbills) for you to submit for potential out-of-network reimbursement. See the FAQs for what to ask your insurer →

Do we have to be in Massachusetts for sessions?

You must be physically located in Massachusetts during our sessions — or in Connecticut, New Hampshire, or Rhode Island, where I'm also licensed.

We're not married. Is this still for us?

Yes. Married, engaged, or partnered long-term — the work is the same.

How is this different from counseling we've already tried?

Three things: 90-minute sessions instead of 50, a practice that sees couples only, and a structure — assessment, roadmap, real work — with a finish line built in.
